Understanding the structure of influential people attending a conference

The Synap tool was used to create a network representation of those attending the recent Public Relations Institute of New Zealand (PRINZ) annual conference. PRINZ wanted to know whom were the influential people amongst those attending. Knowing this would enable them to better grow their membership as they could target marketing strategies through those already influential across the comms/PR professionals. PRINZ also wanted to know the extent to which members saw the PRINZ initiatives of value, particularly amongst those that had influence. 

Uses of the Synap platform for conference stakeholders:

For the conference lead organisation:

  1. Identify communication channels to use to grow membership.
  2. Highlight pathways to increase engagement with current strategies of the agency.

For the conference delegates

  1. Identify those they already know whom can introduce them to new people they want to meet.
  2. Identify those that have a similar interest and/or area of expertise.

For the conference organiser

  1. Provide some further value add to their clients (whom they are organising the conference for.
  2. Identify individuals to speak to future conferences (based on their demonstrated centrality in a community)

  1. A robust approach to present complex information about connections across conference delegates, in a simple and engaging format.
  2. Develop effective communication strategies by identifying the key individuals.
  3. Develop pathways to increase engagement with important strategies/initiatives.
  4. Identify individuals that connect up sub groups within the community.

Example - analysing a conference network for the Public Relations Institute of NZ

Synap was commissioned by PRINZ to support their annual conference. The project identified the network of those attending the conference; whom was influential in affecting thinking/practice for PR and Communications professionals; and how to increase engagement with a range of PRINZ strategies.
