
Understanding the NZX50 directors as a network
The Synap tool was used to create a network representation of the board of directors of the top 50 companies on the New Zealand stock exchange. Using a form of Social Network Analysis, three key network measures were applied to the map of the NZX50 directors. Each of these measures are explained below, along with a link to the interactive Synap visualisation platform.
Use the NZX50 Synap platform to:
- Identify the key individuals, i.e. those whom connect up disconnected groups; those whom can control the flow of ideas; and, those whom can be used to quickly acquire information about the workings of the boards.
- Identify the boards that have limited connections into other parts of the network. Depending on teh strategy of the board/investor, limited connectivity may be a good thing.
- Identify individuals that you may want on your board - to allow the flow of ideas across different parts of the New Zealand business landscape.
Network measures
Brokering by Gender:

This visualisation shows the position of male (blue) and females (red) across the NZX50 network. Those in strong brokering roles provide pathways into groups who are not well connected to one another. It is these individuals that can act as gatekeepers to ideas moving across groups.

Influencers:

Those who are influential in networks can control the flow of ideas because they are connected to both those who have multiple connections, and those whom have very few other connections. Some people are there more influential than others in the NZX50 network because of who they share directorships with.

Those with large reach can be used to move information rapidly across the network. They are also key sources for quickly acquiring informaiton from across a network.
